Trent Et Quarante, the origin of the name Trent, is actually a charming treatise on biblical natureism, which is also the origination of the title. This book is a response the naturalism of seventeenth-century church fathers and the Reformation, which denied the doctrine of salvation by grace alone. Et Quarante argues through this book that grace can be a work done by free will, while faith can be a work done by predestination. This means that we choose to believe what we want.

The most important part of the book consists of chapters divided into three parts, each dealing with one of the three main theologies, original sin, grace, and merit. Parts 1 through 3 focus primarily on the doctrine of original sin. This book contains a number illuminating conversations among its contributors. Some are surprising candid about how their religious beliefs and practices match up. Some conversations are quite poignant, given the subject matter.

Parts two to three are primarily concerned with the doctrines of merit. Et Quarante offers an interesting argument against the notion of original sin. He argues that those who subscribe to this view do it because they have a misunderstood what it means. Et Quarante, John Locke, and others, believe that the doctrine of original sin is the source of the notion of merit. Locke's belief that original sin unites people with all the negative consequences of their actions is obvious. Therefore, according to Et Quarante and his co-writers, if one were to follow Locke's view on merit, one would inevitably become a sinner by the end of one's life.

Et Quarante however points out that there are more merits than this. Remember, however, that salvation is not a result of sins. It is because we were created in God's image and likeness. Therefore, there is nothing that can separate us from our union with God. This is Et Quarante∏s metaphysics of original Sin and the core of his message. He presents salvation in this way as a mystery that is hard to understand.

In another interesting story, Et Quarante relates the story of David and Bathsheba, the daughters of Absorption. David had rejected the offer of Bathsheba (the daughter of Esdragel) for divorce due to her unfaithfulness. Bathsheba was so beautiful that David was ready to marry her but for reasons of purity, which was why he chose to marry her to undo the damage he had done. The metaphysics of original sin made it impossible for David to consummate their marriage as he was bound by the Law of Moses and the commandments of God.

Et Quarante draws heavily from the works of Robert Edward Grant, Hugh Walker, and Anthony Coady in explaining the philosophy of merit and demerit. However, he acknowledges the debt he owes to older works. Trent Et Quarante is very interested in medieval natural theology. He includes commentaries on the works Basil, Origen, Augustine. All of these writers support the doctrines of creation and divine providence. Many passages echo these arguments. The book contains many references to biblical scripture and other interpretive details.

This book is one of my favorite books on natural theology. Trent Et Quarante presents a clear and concise explanation of this important subject. This guide will be a valuable resource for anyone looking to defend the faith.
